The three layers
Your KDP account holds your legal identity. Each book's contributor field holds the pen name shown to buyers. Author Central then attaches a public profile, bio, and photo to that pen name.
- Account: legal name, never changed for branding
- Contributor: the pen name readers see
- Author Central: the profile page readers visit
Where it breaks
Books do not appear under the right profile when the contributor name is spelled differently between titles. Author Central access fails when the account email differs from the one on file. And authors who put a pen name in the tax interview fail verification.
The setup sequence
Publish with the exact pen name in the contributor field, claim the pen name in Author Central with the same spelling, and keep the account's legal identity untouched.
