Why a skeleton beats a blank page

Outlines do not decide your story; they decide the order of events, and the three-act structure is how readers build expectations. The generator produces the nine-beat skeleton — inciting incident, first turn, midpoint, darkest moment, and resolution — with placeholders you replace with your own scenes.

Use it upside down as a review tool: if a finished draft is sagging, map its chapters onto the skeleton to see where the tension stalls. The fix is usually moving the midpoint — not adding more words.

  • One beat per chapter works for 18-24 chapter novels
  • Keep act two between 40-50 percent of the book
  • Series books: the midpoint beat often carries the series arc
