KDP children's book guide
Whole coloring books
Create a coloring book with a complete, ordered PDF.
A collection of separate pictures is not yet a book. Arrange your own line art, edit the title and captions, add blank backs if needed, and download one complete PDF. The separate AI workspace below can help draft your theme and scenes.

Assemble your whole book: Coloring book
Bring your own text or illustrations. This free local composer makes a complete book file; it does not call an AI model or unlock paid projects.
Paper size: 8.5 × 11 in · 300 DPI
The PDF contains fixed, raster pages at 300 DPI with a title page and page numbers. Text remains editable here before export; use EPUB for selectable, reflowable ebook text. This is not a full-wrap cover or an automatic KDP approval check.
Check your actual book image resolutionBuild a book with checkpoints, not one blind prompt
Choose fiction, nonfiction, or a coloring book, review the complete outline, then approve page writing. The result is a working first draft that still needs your factual and editorial review.
Start with the finished book your reader needs
Choose a theme, an audience and a level of detail before making the first picture. A garden book for early learners needs large enclosed shapes and generous white space. An adult botanical collection can use finer line work, but every page still needs a clear subject and enough room to color. Put your intended page order into a short list so the finished PDF has a progression rather than twenty unrelated images.
The local composer above accepts artwork you already own or have permission to use. Try the original flower samples to see the complete workflow without an account. Replace them with your pages, enter a title and author, then prepare the PDF. This step assembles files in your browser and does not send your manuscript or pictures to an image model.
Use AI for drafts, then inspect each page
The AI book workspace on this page starts in coloring-book mode. Describe the theme, reader and desired complexity, then review the proposed outline before generating scenes. Its existing account, usage and payment rules still apply; the free local composer does not unlock a paid project or include unlimited image generation.
Ask for clear black outlines, a plain white background, closed shapes and no lettering when you intend to add captions yourself. Inspect every result for broken contours, accidental gray fills, tiny regions and repeated objects. A prompt is an instruction, not a guarantee that the model will produce printable line art. Keep only the pages that meet your own visual standard and have been legitimately downloaded before assembling them here.
Arrange pages and choose blank backs deliberately
Upload PNG or JPEG files in reading order, then use the move buttons to change the sequence. Each picture can have its own caption, which you can edit before export. Transparent PNG regions are printed on white paper. The image is fitted proportionally inside the page; the composer does not stretch it or crop off the edges to fill the sheet.
With blank backs enabled, the title page and each coloring page are followed by an empty page. Two pictures therefore produce six PDF pages: title, blank, picture, blank, picture, blank. This places pictures on separate fronts in the document. It does not change your printer settings; check duplex orientation or print only the intended fronts when making a physical copy.
Check source resolution instead of trusting a DPI label
The PDF has an actual 612 × 792 point page size, equivalent to 8.5 × 11 inches, and each page is rendered at 2550 × 3300 pixels. That is a 300-DPI raster page. The title, captions and page numbers are part of that fixed page image; they are not selectable PDF text. Keep your original files if you need to edit the book later.
A small source image cannot gain real detail just because the page is rendered at 300 DPI. After export, the composer reports the lowest effective source-image PPI at its placed size. If that number is low, inspect the original at print size, use a larger source, or simplify the design. Print a sample page and check that fine outlines remain visible. The separate image DPI checker can help you compare pixel dimensions with a physical print size.
Understand the file limits and recover from an error
You can add up to twenty images, at most 8 MB each, 64 MB in total and 24 megapixels per image. Captions can contain up to 400 characters. The composer processes one drawing canvas at a time and checks image dimensions before decoding. A damaged file, unsupported format or oversized image produces a visible error and leaves your inputs available so you can correct the problem.
When an export fails, remove the damaged image or replace it with a valid PNG or JPEG, then prepare the PDF again. Do not rename another file format to .png. If a caption is too long for the available space, shorten it. Wait for the complete-book download link, open the saved PDF and review every page rather than relying only on the title-page preview.
Finish the publishing checks after the book is assembled
This export is an interior document with a title page. It is not a full-wrap cover, a commercial license check, a physical print test or a promise of retailer approval. Confirm that your chosen printer accepts the page size, page count, margins and raster content. Review any AI-content disclosure requirements in the current publishing workflow you use.
Use the cover calculator only after your final interior page count is settled. For a story driven by captions and illustrations, use the square storybook composer instead. For exercises with writing lines, use the workbook composer. For selectable ebook text and adjustable reading size, use the text ebook workflow and EPUB download. These are different output formats, so choose the one your reader will actually use.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the whole-book PDF free?
The local assembly tool is free for your own text and images. AI generation and paid book projects keep their existing usage and payment rules.
Does this automatically turn any photo into coloring line art?
No. The composer places the images you provide. Use or create suitable line art first, inspect it, and then assemble the approved pages.
Can I sell the finished coloring book?
Check the rights and licenses for every image, font and other contribution you use. The export itself does not grant rights to third-party material or guarantee marketplace acceptance.
