KDP comic book guide

Publish a comic book on KDP with clean line art.

Comics need sharp line art at print size and the right trim for the panel grid. KDP uses book trade sizes, not newsstand comic sizes, so plan the layout accordingly.

Three steps to a finished file set

01

Check the line art resolution

300 DPI at print size keeps lines crisp. Screens exports and web files usually fall short.

Calculate the cover geometry

Page count drives the spine. Size the full wrap for the chosen trim before placing cover art.

KDP uses book trims, not newsstand sizes

The traditional 6.625 × 10.25 inch comic size is not a KDP trim. The closest practical choices are 7 × 10 inches for full-page grids, 6 × 9 inches for manga-style reading, and 8.5 × 11 inches for large-format graphic novels.

Full-page panels that touch the page edge need 0.125 inches of bleed, and interior color should be premium color when the art is full color.

  • 7 × 10 in for standard panel grids
  • Premium color for full-color art
  • 0.125 in bleed on full-page panels

Line art and export rules

Export every page at 300 DPI at final print size, with black line art kept in grayscale or CMYK-safe color rather than screenshot RGB artifacts. Halftone moiré appears when art is scaled in a layout app instead of exported at size.

Confirm the current trim and color combinations in KDP help, because supported options change by marketplace and interior type.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best KDP size for a comic book?

7 × 10 inches is the closest practical KDP trim to standard comic proportions. KDP does not offer the 6.625 × 10.25 inch newsstand size.

Should a comic use standard or premium color?

Premium color for full-color art. Standard color suits mostly monochrome interiors with occasional color accents.

What resolution does comic line art need?

300 DPI at the final printed size for both line art and color pages. Web-resolution exports will print soft and can fail review.

Do full-page panels need bleed?

Yes. Any panel touching a trimmed edge needs 0.125 inches of bleed so the art runs cleanly to the edge.
