Create a clean KDP manuscript template
Download a real DOCX with book-sized pages, mirrored margins, title and copyright pages, and a reusable Heading 1 chapter style.
A template is a clean starting point, not a guarantee. Recheck margins, page count, fonts, images, and the exported PDF after the manuscript is final.
Why 6 × 9 is a starting point, not a universal answer
Six by nine inches is common for general nonfiction and many novels because it balances line length, page count, and physical handling. A compact novel may feel better at 5.5 × 8.5, while a workbook or manual may need 7 × 10 or larger.
The template sets the page geometry and basic styles. The final inside margin still depends on page count, paper, binding behavior, and the actual KDP setup.
Finish the manuscript before the cover
Once the 6 × 9 interior is final, export the PDF, verify that every page is the same size, and use its exact page count in the cover calculator. A draft count creates the wrong spine even when the art is otherwise correct.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What dimensions are used in the DOCX?
The section page size is 6 inches wide by 9 inches high. The template also enables mirrored margins for facing pages.
Does it include bleed?
The starter is designed for a normal no-bleed text interior. Edge-to-edge images need a different page setup and careful export review.
Use the exact exported page count next.
