Why a preview is useful and why it stays a preview
Back covers die in mockups when the barcode is missing, wrong width, or floating in the middle of the blurb. A preview gives the designer a correct EAN-13 to drop in, so the pitch deck, landing page, and marketing images look like a finished book.
Amazon KDP places the final barcode automatically and prints its own high-resolution version — your generated file never goes into the print file. Put it on a separate layer in your design, and delete it before exporting the print PDF.
- Keep the barcode near the bottom edge of the back cover, right side
- Leave quiet space around it — a clean white box reads correctly
- Do not scale a small preview up; regenerate at the size you need
Do not confuse the barcode with the spine or wrap geometry
The barcode sits inside the back-cover panel, whose width depends on page count and paper. Generate the wrap dimensions first in the cover calculator, then place the barcode and blurb inside that panel. A barcode that reaches into the spine area is a cover-rejection pattern.
