The standard trims

Most picture books ship at 8.5x8.5 in square or 8.5x11 in landscape or portrait. KDP's accepted trim list includes these and a few others, but buyers and printers both expect the standards.

Coloring book specs

Coloring books print on black-and-white interior paper, so pages must be pure grayscale or line art. Interiors do not use CMYK; covers do. Keep line weight consistent and margins generous on the bound edge.

  • Interior: grayscale or black line art only
  • Cover: CMYK with 0.125 in bleed
  • Minimum 300 DPI for all artwork

Image quality rules

Blurry picture book interiors are one of the most reported print complaints. KDP enforces a minimum resolution; anything below it triggers a rejection or a soft print.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a children's picture book?

8.5x8.5 in for square books and 8.5x11 in for large formats. Both are widely accepted by KDP and familiar to buyers.

Do coloring books need bleed?

No. Coloring pages should not touch the edge, so interior files need no bleed. Covers still require it.

Should children's book images be RGB or CMYK?

Interiors upload as RGB and print converted; covers should be CMYK-ready with 0.125 in bleed.

Why are my picture book images blurry in the printed book?

Resolution below 300 DPI is the usual cause. Check every image with the DPI checker before exporting.
